John Butler 11/17/2005 White Abalone Photo taken using a Insite Scorpio camera (Nikon E995) mounted on a Phantom ROV. "The white abalone was the first marine invertebrate listed under the Endangered Species Act as result of human harvest. Due to overfishing in the 1970s, the density of white abalone ia very low. They are broadcast spawners and males and females must be within 2 meters for successful fertilization." |
